OneRoof opened 12 company-owned stores in rural areas of the Yucatan and Veracruz states of Mexico, focusing initially on core ICT services of public-access computing for desktop applications and Internet services such as web surfing, email, chat, etc.
Consistent with many cybercafes and government-based computing center initiatives, such services alone were not sufficient to provide adequate profits for sustainability.
Desired partnerships to add to ICT by offering more services and in-demand computer-based educational products were not readily available in the Mexican market.
Given that such partnerships are ample in India (e.g. online railway, bus and flight ticketing; mobile recharges; bank extension services) and the strong consumer demand for computer literacy, OneRoof decided to exit the Mexican market to better focus its resources on the successful launch and scale-up of the OneRoof franchising model in India.
Several OneRoof stores in Yucatan and Veracruz were sold to former employees at favorable terms and are now operating as independent entities.
