OneRoof Expands to Veracruz, Mexico in Summer 2007

OneRoof opened the doors to its first store in the state of Veracruz, Mexico on Friday June 15, 2007 in the town of Ixhuatlan del Cafe. Ixhuatlan del Cafe is a coffee-producing community of about 15,000 people located about an hour north of Cordoba.
OneRoof Regional Manager Martin Cuenca Montiel reported the Ixhuatlan store to be doing brisk business on its opening day, after cutting the ceremonial grand-opening ribbon in front of a substantial crowd of onlookers. A number of young people returned throughout the afternoon to find an available computer to log on to the Internet. Customers expressed satisfaction at the high quality of the computer equipment and Internet connection, and the clean and comfortable space. Parents showed interest in OneRoof's computer courses for their children while school is out of session for the summer. Many were even more interested to learn that courses geared to adults and non-students are available.
Among the initial services being offered at the new OneRoof store in Ixhuatlan are vision testing and eyeglasswear prescription services, in partnernship with Scojo Foundation, that are currently being offered successfully in six additional stores.

First Sites Selected
As part of the process of opening its first one hundred stores, OneRoof will be opening company-owned stores in India and Mexico within the next two months.

In northern districts of Tamil Nadu state in India, we have selected Arani, Pudupatinam, and Maduranthagam as the first communities in which we will operate, with two more communities soon to be added. In Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, OneRoof stores will open in Acanceh, Muna, Telchac Puerto, and Tixkokob. These company-owned stores, along with our first franchise—in Becal, Mexico— will serve as initial proving grounds for OneRoof’s vision, including as market test beds for our products and services.

Opening the stores is an important step forward and will allow us to refine our model before the new franchisees join in the summer of 2006. Three weeks of in-depth operator training for the staff hired to run these stores will be completed by early May.

Becal Takes the Lead
A “community information center” cybercafe was established over three years ago in Becal, a community of six thousand people in Campeche state of Mexico, as part of the work of World Corps, the predecessor organization to OneRoof. The members of the cooperative that runs this center were selected and trained by World Corps. That group of entrepreneurs has successfully managed and expanded their business.

The Becal team has now entered into an agreement with OneRoof expressing its intent to convert into a OneRoof franchise as soon as possible. The core information and communications elements of OneRoof’s vision have already been successfully implemented in Becal. This will allow the Becal franchise to experience the effect of enabling the OneRoof range of essential services in a fairly established market.

In addition, two members of the Becal team will assist the staff of OneRoof Mexico. Rafael Ojeda will contribute to our training program, working directly with new operators and franchisees and giving them the opportunity to learn directly from Becal’s successes. Edwin Ojeda will work half-time in the OneRoof offices providing technical support. We are pleased to welcome Rafael, Edwin and their other Becal colleagues, Luis and Magdiel, to the OneRoof family.

CEO Addresses BYU Conference
On March 10, 2006, OneRoof CEO Dwight Wilson gave a presentation at the 9th annual Economic Self-Reliance conference at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah. Dwight described the OneRoof business model to an audience of practitioners, researchers, and funders working in the field of ‘microfranchising’—franchised enterprises at the base of the global pyramid that have a direct focus on poverty alleviation.

Audience response to the presentation was strong. John Hatch, the founder of microfinance institution FINCA and creator of the village banking method of poverty lending, told the audience after Dwight’s talk: “That was the most concise yet comprehensive summary of the problems of economic development and their potential solution that I have ever heard after 44 years in the development business... In addition to your IT focus, I love your central organizing principle--community participation in the design of the solution strategy that best fits its needs. I think you are really on to something very powerful.”

Our thanks go to Jason Fairbourne and Todd Manwaring at BYU for the opportunity to speak. Further thanks go to another Utahn, Kirk Magleby, the author of “Microfranchises as a Solution to Global Poverty,” who has offered much helpful advice and many contacts in the last few months. On February 16 at Stanford University, OneRoof co-hosted a microfranchising learning lab with Jason and Todd’s team that brought together forty Bay Area practitioners, researchers, and funders.
